Abstract

Spent batteries are defined as end-of-life primary batteries such as batteries being used as power sources for remote controllers, watches, cassettes players, and toys and rechargeable secondary batteries such as batteries being used for laptops, mobiles, and automobiles. Since such spent batteries contain valuable metals such as Ag, Co, Ni, Zn, Mn, Li, Cu and so on, development of recycling process for recovery of those valuable metals from spent batteries are necessary. Also, spent batteries contain toxic metals such as Pb, Cd, Hg, and electrolytes such as KOH, NH4C6, Li salts, and H2SO4. For those toxic materials, the recycling process of spent batteries should be developed with consideration of environmental problems. Recently developed processes are consisted of sorting, crushing, sieving and pre-treatment for separation valuable metals from spent batteries. Such process can be complex because of sorting and crushing processes which are dangerous during operation. Also, harmful gas emission can pollute environment during crushing and sieving process. In this study, newly proposed recycling process was attempted to solve the problems mentioned above and concentrate valuable metals more efficiently.
