Abstract

In Korea, various policies are being implemented under the leadership of the government to establish the Business Incubation Ecosystem (BIE) where the processes of business, growth, recovery, and reinvestments are in a virtuous cycle. Business Incubators (BI) are the foundation of Korea's business incubation ecosystem, which provides various services to support growth by discovering startups with technological and business potential. However, in recent years, as the Business Incubators fail to lead the changing business incubation environment and fail to bring its own distinct direction, it is threatening the nourishment·growth of the early start-up companies. Therefore, this study analyzed the development process and research trends of the Korea Business Incubators through a systematic review of the research papers of the Korea Business Incubators to explore the direction of development through enhancing the operational performance of the start-ups of the Business Incubators. As a result of the study, most research methodologies related to the operating performance of domestic Business Incubators were conducted to empirical analysis through surveys. The three factors that determine the operational performance of the Business Incubators are the support service of the Business Incubators, the characteristics of the incubating start-ups, and the characteristics of the Business Incubator itself. The results are measured in terms of financial, non-financial, and satisfaction with the Business Incubators, degree of community start-up, and dependence of the Business Incubator as a reverse performance factor. In particular, the capacity of the support services of Business incubators and their managers is a key factor in determining the operation performance of the Business incubator. This study derives the operation performance and determining factors of the operational performance of Business Incubators through a systematic review of the development process and research trends of domestic Business Incubators. The research agenda and policy implications were presented to researchers on Business Incubators and their Business Incubation to improve the effectiveness of the operational performance of Business Incubators.
