- Abstract
- This study set out to examine the need for and importance of teaching newly-coined vocabularies in Korean education, identify newly-coined vocabularies that foreign KSL learners got to encounter a lot in daily life, and explore efficient plans for KSL learners to learn newly-coined vocabularies. For these purposes, the study examined a list of newly-coined vocabularies that KSL learners encountered often in daily life by searching hashtags on Instagram, a popular SNS program frequently used by students, based on the collection of newly-coined vocabulary materials by the National Institute of the Korean Language and found out that there were differences in the patterns of using vocabulary between Instagram, a private domain of students, and previous studies. These findings shed further light on newly-coined words of life that KSL learners used and encountered in their daily lives, thus adding more significance to the study. In addition, the study talked about new methods of education and a need for them in Korean education based on various Internet media in line with changes to the lesson environment different from the past. Taking this into consideration, the investigator conducted research on educational plans for students to learn newly-coined vocabularies in easier and more enjoyable ways and proposed a couple of lesson plans for newly-coined vocabularies applicable to the classroom setting as well as the Internet by making use of card news, a custom news format for smartphones. In the present study, there was the utmost emphasis on education for newly-coined vocabularies with a selection of the ones that became current social issues among newly-coined words that were fast to be created and disappear so that KSL learners could improve their communication skills and understand the rapidly changing social phenomena of South Korea. It was also stressed that different methods should be adopted for education on newly-coined vocabularies from essential ones. The study will hopefully be followed by more researches on a range of educational plans that will help KSL learners with their communication in real life as they study Korean in South Korea.
