Alternative diagnostic approach and laser treatment for urinary tract infection

Metadata Downloads
Abstract
Urinary tract infection (UTI) is an infection in any part of the urinary system, such as the urethra, bladder, ureters, and kidneys. UTIs typically occur when bacteria enter the urinary tract through the urethra and begin to spread in the bladder or any other urinary system. This study aims to develop an alternative diagnosis and laser treatment for patients with urological procedures. The approach to diagnose the bacteria-caused UTI is using anthocyanin from eggplant peels which can identify the color changes from bacteria. For the alternative treatment, a 405 nm laser light is used and delivered using basket integrated fiber device. The diagnostic process is successfully created using anthocyanin, which is able to distinguish bacteria based on the color production of each bacterium. The identification ability of anthocyanin is due to urease production, which impacts the different ammonia levels of bacteria. Additionally, the treatment process also obtained an inhibitory effect. The production of reactive oxygen species attempted to remove the biofilm on the urethral stent. The inhibition rate corresponds to a 2.2 log reduction in colony-forming units/mL of bacteria after 10 minutes of 405 nm light exposure (0.3 W/cm2). Thus, the diagnostic approach and laser treatment application can be used for patients with urological procedures with a further examination in clinical translations.
