- Abstract
- Ethoxyquin is most commonly used as an antioxidant in animal feed for the purpose of preventing rancidity. In the living body of fish fed a feed containing ethoxyquin, some may be converted to ethoxyquin dimer and accumulated in the muscle, there are concerns about potential side effects as it is transmitted to the person who ingested it. This study was conducted to determine the residual amount of ethoxyquin and ethoxyquin dimer in farmed fish. In order to analyze ethoxyquin and ethoxyquin dimer, extraction and purification with acetonitrile were used and LC-MS/MS (Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry) was used. As a result of verifying the effectiveness of this test method, the calibration curve of ethoxyquin and ethoxyquin dimer showed excellent linearity with a correlation coefficient of 0.99 or more. As a result of testing the limit of detection and limit of quantitation for rockfish, salmon, shrimp and manila clam the limit of detection of ethoxyquin was 0.0012 to 0.0134 mg/kg, and the limit of quantitation was 0.0035 to 0.0407 mg/kg. The detection limit of ethoxyquin dimer was 0.0016~0.0035 mg/kg, and the limit of quantification was 0.0048~0.1010 mg/kg. In the recovery rate test to evaluate the accuracy, ethoxyquin was 90.9 to 119.4% and ethoxyquin dimer was 67.1 to 110.5% as a result of rockfish, salmon, shrimp, and manila clam.
As the test method of this study, ethoxyquin and ethoxyquin dimer were monitored for 126 farmed fish imported through Busan in 2021 and 144 farmed fish produced and shipped in Korea. As a result, there was no individual exceeding the domestic standard specification. Among the 144 domestic farmed fish, the highest detected was freshwater eel at 0.827 mg/kg, 23 out of 25 were detected, among the 126 cases of oversea farmed fish, the highest detected yellowfish at rate was 0.717 mg/kg, which was detected in all 43 cases. For ethoxyquin and ethoxyquin dimer, both domestic and foreign farmed fish were not detected or were detected below the residual tolerance level, so they were at a safe level. However, since imports of aquatic products and production of aquaculture products are steadily increasing, continuous monitoring of ethoxyquin and ethoxyquin dimer seems to be necessary.
