Alternative Title
Characteristics of Water Quality Variation due to Mid-long Term Constructions of Busan New-port
Abstract
In this study, mid-long term water quality data from 2002 to 2021 around Gadeok Island, Nakdong River estuary, and Busan New-port were collected and analyzed to examine changes in the marine environment and water quality environment due to the construction of Busan New-port. In addition, it was intended to provide basic data for scientific and systematic water quality environment management on how the construction of the Busan New-port affected the changes in the water quality environment in the surrounding sea in the mid-long term. Through this, this study aimed to provide basic data on how the mid-to long-term construction of Busan New-port had an effect on changes in the water quality environment of the surrounding sea area and how to manage the water quality environment of the sea area scientifically and systematically in the future. The summary of the results obtained through this study was as follows.
First, 37 individual constructions were carried out in Busan New-port, and as a result of calculating the amount of rubble stone, sand, and dredging, which are the main causes of SS occurrence over the past 20 years, rubble stone was 21,309,326 ㎥ (11.9%) and sand was 40,872,992 ㎥ (22.8%), the amount of dredging was 116,776,512 ㎥ (65.3%).
Second, the period in which dredging occurred the most in Busan New-port was between 2005 and 2008, and the input of rubble stones and sand was concentrated between 2000 and 2010. In addition, dredging and reclamation during the north container terminal construction period accounted for more than 58% of the total.
Third, as a result of cluster analysis using suspended solids (SS) data measured for 20 years, a high concentration of SS was observed in Yongwon during phase I (before 2012 year). In addition, during phase Ⅱ-1 (2013-2017 year), SS concentration was high at the construction site of seaway dredging and construction of the south container pier, and finally, during phase Ⅱ-2 (2015-2021 year), SS concentration was high at the construction site of the west container terminal.
The construction of Busan New-port was a mid- to long-term large-scale construction in a certain area, which is a typical feature of megaport construction, and at the same time, a long-term post-environmental impact survey was conducted, which had the conditions for scientifically analyzing spatial changes in water quality.
In this study, it was possible to analyze the amount of SS generation and its change in large-scale, long-term construction by comparing the construction volume for each phase of port development and the change in SS according to the post-environmental impact survey. As a result, in the case of Busan New-port, it was estimated that SS concentration was high only in a spatially very narrow area, and the water quality of the sea area was restored to the state before dredging and reclamation in a short period of time.
Finally, when the sea environment around Busan New-port changes in a complex way due to the construction of Jinhae New-port and Gadeok New-airport, the results obtained in this study can be used as important basic data for future comparison data and prediction of water quality change in the sea area.
