Osteological development of larvae and juvenile in cultured small yellow croaker, Larimichthys polyactis (Perciformes: Sciaenidae)
Abstract
In this study, we describe the osteological development of the neurocranium, visceral skeleton, pectoral girdle, vertebral column, fins, and pterygiophore of small yellow croaker Larimichthys polyactis cultured at the Jeju Fisheries Research Institute. At 5.89 mm NL (notochord length), larvae already show ossified frontal and basioccipital bones, parasphenoids, and vomer in the neurocranium. Prootic, supraoccipital and pterotic bones were ossified at 6.19 mm SL (standard length). Basisphenoid was ossified at 28.21 mm SL. All elements of the visceral skeleton except the metapterygoid were ossified at 5.89 mm NL, and metapterygoid was ossified at 8.11 mm SL. Preorbital bone was ossified at 8.11 mm SL, and suborbital bones were completely ossified at 12.90 mm SL. In the vertebral column, ossification proceeded from the first to the last centrum. The urostyle was ossified at 7.41 mm SL, and all centra were ossified at 8.11 mm SL. The caudal skeleton was ossified at 6.78 mm NL, along with three hypural bones. epiural bones were ossified at 8.31 mm SL and ossification was complete by 10.09 mm SL. In the pectoral girdle, the cleithrum, supracleithrum, postcleithrum, and post-temporal bones were ossified at 5.89 mm NL. Coracoid, scapular, and radial bones were ossified at 10.32 mm SL. Ossification of the caudal fin began at 6.19 mm SL and was complete at 7.16 mm SL. Ossification of the pectoral and pelvic fins began at 8.1 and 8.91 mm SL, were complete at 11.32 and 10.32 mm SL, respectively. Ossification of the dorsal and anal fins began at 7.16 mm SL and was complete at 8.62 and 8.11 mm SL, respectively. Anal pterygiophores were ossified at 8.11 mm SL, and ossification of the dorsal pterygiophore and supraneural bones began at 8.91 mm SL. Ossification of the anal and dorsal pterygiophore bones was complete at 9.86 and 11.54 mm SL, respectively, and that of the supraneural bones was complete at 9.60 mm SL.
