- Abstract
- Purpose
Significant correlations between nurses' role overload, organizational support, nurse-physician collaboration, nurse-nurse collaboration, and missed nursing care have been identified in the literature. However, there is a lack of research on whether there are single and sequential mediation effects of organizational support and interprofessional collaboration on the relationship between nurses’ role overload and missed nursing care among general ward nurses. This study aimed to identify single and sequential multiple mediation effects of organizational support, nurse-physician collaboration, and nurse-nurse collaboration on the relationship between role overload and missed nursing care among general ward nurses.
Methods
A survey conducted in October 2022 was used to obtain data from 237 nurses at a single university hospital in Busan. The measures used were the role overload revised version, the nurse-physician collaboration scale, the nurse-nurse collaboration behavior scale, the short version of the perceived organizational support scale, and the modified version of the missed nursing care scale. Data were analyzed using SPSS 27.0 and the PROCESS macro for SPSS v4.1. A hypothesis test was performed using model 81 proposed by Hayes.
Results
Organizational support, nurse-physician collaboration, and nurse-nurse collaboration each showed a single mediation effect on the relationship between role overload and missed nursing care in general ward nurses. In addition, organizational support and nurse-physician collaboration showed significant multiple and sequential mediation effects. On comparing single mediation effects, the mediation effect of nurse-physician collaboration was greater than that of nurse-nurse collaboration. On comparing multiple mediation effects, the sequential mediation effect of organizational support and nurse-physician collaboration was greater than the sequential mediation effect of organizational support and nurse-nurse collaboration.
Conclusion
This study found that a single mediation effect of nurse-physician collaboration and the sequential mediation effect through organizational support including nurse-physician collaboration on the relationship between role overload and missed nursing care were found to be greater than simple and sequential mediation effects involving nurse-nurse collaboration on the relationship. Hence, greater efforts to strengthen nurse-physician and nurse-nurse collaboration through organizational support may be an effective strategy to reduce missed nursing care in general wards.
