Abstract

The purpose of this study is to verify the mediating effect of insecure adult attachment in the effect of parenting behavior of mothers in childhood perceived by college students on covert narcissism. Therefore, the research questions set according to the purpose of the study are as follows.

1. What is the relationship between parenting behavior of mothers in childhood, covert narcissism, and insecure adult attachment perceived by college students?

2. What is the mediating effect of insecure adult attachment in the relationship between parenting behavior of mothers in childhood and covert narcissism perceived by college students?

To solve the research problem, a Google online survey was conducted on 322 male and female college students attending universities in the metropolitan area (Seoul and Gyeonggi), Gyeongsang-do, Chungcheong-do, and Jeonla-do, and all 322 copies collected without missing data were used as this study data. As research tools, the Parenting Behavior Scale (PBI), the covert narcissism Scale (CNS), and the Adult Attachment Scale (ECR-R), which report the parenting behavior perceived by children, were used. The collected data were subjected to frequency analysis, correlation analysis, and regression analysis using SPSS 29.0, and the mediating effect was verified using SPSS Process macro.

The results of this study are summarized as follows.

First, among early parenting behaviors of mothers in childhood perceived by college students, positive parenting behavior was negatively correlated with covert narcissism, insecure adult attachment, and negative parenting behavior was positively correlated with both anxiety attachment and avoidance attachment, which are sub-factors of insecure adult attachment. Second, insecure adult attachment was found to play a mediating role in the relationship between the parenting behavior of mothers in childhood perceived by college students and covert narcissism. The mother's positive parenting behavior perceived by early childhood college students indirectly influenced covert narcissism by mediating insecure adult attachment, and insecure adult attachment played a complete mediating role. and the negative parenting behavior of mothers in childhood perceived by college students directly and indirectly affects covert narcissism. and insecure adult attachment partially mediated. The results of this study confirmed that the parenting behavior of mothers in childhood perceived by college students affects covert narcissism, and that insecure adult attachment plays a mediating role in the relationship between them, suggesting the importance of parenting behavior of mothers in childhood and stable attachment formation. In addition, this study is meaningful in that previous studies conducted on the relationship, influence, and mediating effects of the three variables are insufficient, and it can be expected that follow-up studies on this study will be conducted in the future.
