- The Changes and Characteristics of Application Usage Trends in China before and after COVID-19
- Abstract
- This study took the following research methods to study the impact of COVID-19 on the use trend of applications in China. First, it is a method of comparing statistical data from reports published twice a year by the . In this study, data from June 2018 to December 2022 were used. The data which was published on a six-month basis, was delayed by three months due to COVID-19 in the first half of 2020, and a report published in April showed statistics for March after COVID-19. Second, the use trend of applications after COVID-19 was analyzed through various documents. Third, a big data analysis program was used a application named Baidu Index data analysis.
The results of the study are as follows. In order to analyzed the changes of applications’ using before and after COVID-19, there are 5 parts about before COVID-19, during COVID-19 in addition after COVID-19. In others words, it is before the outbreak of COVID-19 (2018.6∼2019.6), immediately after COVID-19 (2019.7∼2020.3), the first stage COVID-19 (2020.4∼2020.12), the second stage COVID-19 (2021.1∼2021.12), and the third stage COVID-19 (2022.1∼2022.12). After the outbreak of COVID-19, applications ranked the 1st to the 3rd in use increase are online education (81.9%), live broadcasting (29.2%), and online payment (21.3%), while applications ranked the 1st to the 3rd in use decrease are travel reservations (-10.8%), food delivery (-5.6%), and financial techniques (-3.6%). In the first stage of COVID-19, applications ranked the 1st to the 3rd in use increase are remote work (73.4%), short video (12.9%), and payment (11.2%), while applications ranked the 1st to the 3rd in use decrease are online medical care (-22%), online education (-19.2%), and online games (-2.6%). In the second stage of COVID-19, online healthcare (38.7%), remote work (35.7%), and food delivery (29.9%) ranked the 1st to the 3rd in usage growth, and there was no use-reducing application. In the third stage of COVID-19, applications ranked the 1st to the 3rd in use increase were online medical (21.7%), remote work (15.1%), and short video (8.3%), while applications ranked the 1st to the 3rd in use decrease were music (-6.2%), games (-5.8%), and food delivery (-4.2%).
This study selected and analyzed specific examples of the three applications with the most pronounced increase and decrease among the use increase and decrease applications. Applications that have been increased use are online healthcare, telecommuting, and short video. Applications that have been reduced in use are online education, food delivery, and travel reservations. Applications that have increased in use are ‘safeness and Health’, ‘Tencent Meeting’ and ‘TikTok’. Applications that have decreased in use are ‘Dingding’, ‘Meituan takeout’, and ‘Citrip’. Through case analysis, it was possible to more clearly understand the trend changes in application use before and after COVID-19.
