- Abstract
- Geun-Ho Kang (alias: Hwa-Rin Kang, used since 1916) was a Korean independence activist who was born in 1898 in Hamgyeong-do. After becoming involved in an anti-Japanese student incident during his third year at Hamhung Middle School during the Japanese colonial period, Kang fled to Manchuria in 1916 to seek asylum and devoted his life to the independence movement. After the liberation of Korea, he returned from Manchuria and settled in Seoul in 1947. Subsequently, Kang joined his comrades and worked as an instructor at the Central Military Training Center of the Korean Youth Corps. He entered the Korea Military Academy in the fourth round of the eighth class in 1949 and served his country again by participating in the Korean War in 1950. He retired from the military as the commander of the 118 Regiment of the 101st Division and passed away in 1960 at the age of 62 in a small shanty house in Yeongdo, Busan. The only known details about his independence activities can be found in a resume he submitted to the Korea Military Academy for admission in 1949. According to his resume, he participated in the March 1st Movement in 1919 and fought in the Battle of Qingshanli after graduating from the Manchurian Military Academy. While general information about Geun-Ho Kang’s independence activities was presented 2002 study by Jae-Seung Kim, “Nameless Warriors of Manchuria,” specific details need to berevised and updated. This study aimed to provide more specific details about his activities as an instructor at the Military Academy Office of the Northern Military Administration Office in 1920, which was only briefly mentioned in the aforementioned study. This study also examined the activities of the independence movement comrades who worked alongside him during this period at the Shinhyeong Military Academy and Military Academy Office. For specific details, the study actively used data from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan in their records from this period. The Northern Military Administration Office worked together with the Western Military Administration Office to organize and operate the Military Academy Office to develop independence fighters. Hwa-Rin Kang played a role in inviting Jangnyeong Lee as the chief of staff to recruit outstanding individuals from the Shinhyeong Military Academy as instructors. Kang also participated in the Battle of Qingshanli in 1921. This study examines not only the life of Hwa-Rin Kang before and after 1920 but also the independence activists in Manchuria at the time, their directions and preparations for independence activities, and their will and determination for independence more closely. While Hwa-Rin Kang was just one of many independence activists fortunate enough to survive and return to his liberated homeland, there were many independence activists who spent long years in misery and whose spirits remain nameless, wandering the cold plains of Manchuria and Siberia. It is our duty as the descendants of these independence activists who sacrificed their lives for Korea to honor their names and achievements.
