- In today's high-pressure environment, people continuously seek inner healing. Beautifully illustrated picture books with captivating stories provide a sense of beauty and inner healing. While picture books were originally intended for children, adults have also become interested in them as they search for inner healing. Statistics show a gradual decline in the youth population in South Korea in recent years, and yet the children's literature industry is on the rise. Experts attribute this to the increased consumption of picture books by adults. Picture books have evolved over time from being exclusively for children to becoming a suitable format for readers of all ages. Concurrently, the South Korean government has implemented various policies to promote the growth of the picture book industry, indicating a new era of the "Children's Book Renaissance."
Mixed media picture books, as a type of picture book, have expanded the possibilities of picture book creation by breaking away from traditional drawing methods. The success of the book "Cloud Bread" by Baek Heena drew the attention of both picture book authors and readers to mixed media picture books. Various mixed media picture books with different themes have prospered in South Korea. However, due to a lack of research on this type of picture book, this study derives the concept of comprehensive material picture books through a review of previous research, providing theoretical references for future studies. This paper also analyzes the covers of comprehensive material picture books published in South Korea from 2013 to 2023 and selects the top 10 books with the highest sales to analyze the key design features. Through surveys and data analysis, it verifies that mixed media picture book cover designs influence consumer preferences. The study confirms that the four elements of cover design - color, layout, typography, and illustration - have an impact on consumer preferences. Based on these findings, recommendations are provided to mixed media picture book cover designers.
Mixed media picture books are gaining increasing attention, and picture book designers should not limit their vision to specific formats. Instead, they should explore more creative possibilities by incorporating various forms of artistic expression into picture book design. Designers, especially, should pay attention to the illustration design on the covers of picture books. How to cleverly combine various design elements on the cover to captivate readers has become an enduring concern for designers.
