Kim Man-jung's Characteristics of Progressiveness and Grotesque Style Characteristics of People Shown on Guwunmong
Abstract
This study looks into the point that Kim Man-jung as the author of Guwunmong had the characteristics of progressiveness, which was expressed as a progressive characteristics of people in the work.
This study focuses on the grotesque style elements and characteristics of people exposed on the narrative of Guwunmong, which was analyzed based on Bakhtin’s theory of novel. The analysis of the narrative of Guwunmong covers three categories: background, figure and event.
The body II looks into Kim Man-jung’s characteristics of progressiveness, which was analyzed in three aspects: his view of the world, view of language and view of novel. He was progressive all in such three views, which made the foundation of his novel. His characteristics of progressiveness that valued what was required by the people during the period of moving into the modern was as progressive as that of Bakhtin in the characteristics of polyphony, linguistic heterologie and relativity to communicate with the world.
The chapter I of the body Ⅲ analyzes the grotesque style elements of Guwunmong in three categories of background, figure and event based on Bakhtin’s grotesque style realism and characteristics of polyphony. The frame of possibility where such grotesque style elements are made is a way of transmission mainly focusing on analysis of the narrative. The way of transmission, here, is not the single way of downgrading transmission, ‘downing’, but the mutual ways of transmission that makes also ‘upgrading’ in the relations between figures and in the transmission of time and space. It is the ambivalent value and liberated laugh that I, the researcher, regarded as the essence of the grotesque through the analysis of the narrative of Guwunmong. Such ambivalent value and liberated laugh are such vital characteristics of people.
The chapter 2 of the body III, finally, looks into the point that Guwunmong changed as inherited and such change was led by the consciousness of the low class. I looked into its later versions as inherited in order to see the fact that such grotesque style downgrading was made while inherited actually in the real world. Since Guwunmong was created, it has been transmitted with changes generation by generation because it did not only meet the people’s tastes of fun but also it was toward the low class people in the aspects of people’s desire of liberty from their social status and the Middle Ages that Kim Man-jung intended as the ambivalent value.
This study, thus, further looks into the aspect that Guwunmong approached the people in the real world as changed generation by generation, so that it verifies that the grotesque style elements of Guwunmong has the characteristics of people.
