- Abstract
- This study examined the role of parents raising young children based on Laozi's perspective of non-action. To achieve this, the method of literary analysis interpreting the original text of Laozi's "Tao Te Ching" was employed to indicate the parental role. The results of this study are as follows: Parents should become role models for children by regulating themselves to embody qualities such as compassion (慈), frugality (儉), and humility (謙讓). This implies that parents should serve as examples of accepting things as they are without discrimination or comparison with others, fostering desirable virtues and character in their children. Not only that parents should serve as role models by embodying qualities such as femininity and gentleness like water, engaging in reflective thinking and self-examination. Furthermore, they should demonstrate modesty, self-restraint in desires, and exemplify non-contentious behavior by not engaging in conflicts with others. Moreover, parents should nurture children by practicing non-verbal guidance, allowing for broader learning possibilities and creativity without deliberate instruction. This approach encourages children to express their thoughts, inhibits distortion of voluntary activities, and avoids imposing the parent's autocratic thoughts and standardized education. Furthermore, non-verbal guidance for children can be practiced through parents' exemplary conduct. Therefore, parents should embody the practice of heguangtongchen (和光同塵) as a model for children and, furthermore, implement the teachings of heguangtongchen(和光同塵). This involves not revealing oneself recklessly, concealing wisdom even though possessed, maintaining ordinariness, and harmoniously coexisting with others, while teaching children through such behaviors. While this study has provided insights into the exemplary roles and teaching responsibilities of parents with children based on Laozi's "Tao Te Ching," it unavoidably repeated references to the content of the "Tao Te Ching." The reason for this lies in the fact that the original text of the "Tao Te Ching" is not structured with a clear logical organization, unlike contemporary works. This study, applying Laozi's perspective of non-action, suggests that parents, by governing themselves, can become role models for their children and, in turn, practicing the teaching of non-action through their example, are expected to exert a positive influence on their children.
