- Effects of Reformer Pilates Exercise on Neck Alignment, Neck Pain and Function, Balance and Muscle Activation Patterns in Forward Head Posture
- Abstract
- The purpose of this study was to classify adult with forward head posture into three groups (RPE group, CSE group, and CON group) and to compare the effects of 6 weeks of Reformer Pilates Exercise and Cervical Stabilization Exercise on neck alignment, neck pain and function, balance, and muscle activation patterns to provide a basis for developing an effective training program for subjects with forward head posture. Thirty-three adult (17 men, 16 women) with forward head posture were randomly assigned to the Reformer Pilates Exercise group (n=11), the Cervical Stabilization Exercise group (n=11), and the Control group (n=11). Each training program was applied for 6 weeks and the craniovertebral angle (CVA), neck disability index (NDI), balance and muscle activation patterns were measured before and after the training program. The results are as follow: 1. The craniovertebral angle(CVA) after the 6-week training program was significantly increased in the RPE and CSE groups compared to before the training program, and the improvement was higher in the RPE and CSE groups compared to the CON group after the training program. 2. The neck disability index (NDI) after the 6-week training program was significantly reduced in the RPE and CSE groups compared to before the training program. 3. The muscle activation patterns in the lower trapezius muscle (LT) was significantly increased in the RPE group after the 6-week training program compared to before the training program. 4. As a result of confirming the balance after the 6-week training program, there was a significant improvement in the overall stability index (OSI), anterior posterior stability index (APSI), and medial lateral stability index (MLSI) of the eyes closed one leg stance in the RPE and CSE groups, and a higher improvement in the RPE group compared to the CON group. Only the RPE group confirmed significant improvement in the medial lateral stability index(MLSI) in the eyes closed two leg stances. Based on the above research results, we can identify that 6 weeks of reformer pilates exercise and cervical stabilization exercise for forward head posture had positive effects on some variables, that both reformer pilates exercise and cervical stabilization exercise improved craniovertebral angle and neck disability index and that reformer pilates exercise can be provided as an effective training program for balance ability and muscle activation patterns of the lower trapezius in forward head posture.
