Performance Evaluation of Control Algorithm for Module Chiller Staging Considering part load Characteristics
Abstract
This study aims to contribute to energy savings in cooling and heating by utilizing recently developed and widely adopted modular chillers, which play a significant role in mitigating the accelerated effects of global warming. Existing modular chillers have various advantages, but one notable advantage is their ability to operate efficiently at low loads due to the incorporation of high-efficiency inverters and the connection of relatively small capacity modules as the load approaches a specific part-load condition. However, in many cases, the majority of field applications do not take advantage of these benefits and operate all modular chillers during system operation, resulting in the inability to achieve high efficiency at low loads. To address this issue, the control algorithm for chiller staging was developed. Firstly, a performance analysis of modular chillers was conducted targeting domestic buildings, and it was confirmed that the highest EER (Energy Efficiency Ratio) was achieved at around 60% part-load condition. Subsequently, a simulation was built, and the effectiveness of applying the algorithm was examined. Afterwards, a simulation was conducted, and the effectiveness of applying the algorithm was examined. Finally, the algorithm was applied and compared for its effectiveness in a factory located in Chennai, India. The results showed that the EER increased and the power consumption decreased across the entire operating range when the algorithm was applied. Particularly, significant improvements were observed in the low-load range, demonstrating the superior performance of the algorithm in those conditions.
