- Abstract
- The study was performed to investigate the changes in the macrobenthos community structure in response to Sea Surface Temperature (SST) on the hard bottom substrate of the East Sea, Korea. Samples were collected by SCUBA diving at 11 sampling stations in the East Sea of Korea in May and August of 2018 and 2020. Analysis of macrobenthos community was conducted, and clustering analysis was used to understand the separation trends of the stations. Structural characteristics between the separated groups were compared, and the impact of SST on the community structure of the separated groups was determined. The average macrobenthos density and biomass were 552 inds./m2 and 666.65 gWWt/m2. Although there were significant differences in SST at each stations, no difference was observed between the SST of the stations and the community structure of macrobenthos. According to the clustering analysis and nMDS results, divided into Group A (Northern area, St. 1~7) and Group B (Middle and Southern area, St. 8~11). A more abundant appearance was observed in Group B, and there were significant differences in the number of species and abundance. In Group B, the dominant species, the Mytilus galloprovincialis, had a high number of individuals at St. 8 and 9. This phenomenon is believed to be due to the dense distribution caused by the settlement of larvae. Additionally, in Group B at St. 10 and 11, there were a large number of individuals of Amphioda spp. and Caprella spp. This is considered to be due to short-term differences caused by environmental factors, such as the seawater temperature of the hard bottom. Differences in seawater temperature have a slight impact on algae and also affect Amphioda. This is due to the characteristics of feeding on algae and living attached to the leaves of algae. Therefore, the hypothesis 'There will be a distinct difference in macrobenthos community in hard bottom according to the temperature difference of habitats' was rejected. However, it was confirmed that the difference in SST is one of the factors affecting the change in the macrobenthos community in hard bottom in the East Sea, based on the oceanographic frontal zone.
