- Abstract
- The purpose of this study is to understand child abuse through the stories of a person who experienced childhood abuse and to lead interest and discussion on the Anti-abuse Police Officer system, which is a social protection factor.
The research question is, first, what is the trajectory of the life of a person who experienced childhood abuse? Second, what is the meaning of encounter with an Anti-abuse Police Officer in the life of a person who experienced childhood abuse?
The study participant in this study was a 24-year-old male who experienced physical and emotional abuse and neglect from his biological father in childhood. Research data were collected through interviews by mixing face-to-face and non-face-to-face 6 times over 3 months. The first research question, the trajectory of life, was divided into childhood, adolescence, and youth based on the adolescence of the study participants and followed the traces of their lives.
In the second research question, Dimensions, Turning, and Adaptation, the three-step analysis framework suggested by Mandelbaum, was used.
The results of the study are as follows.
First, in the life trajectory of the study participants, in childhood and adolescence, it was a period when the father's daily drinking, assault, and poverty continued. For this reason, the study participant was having a meaningless time with helplessness, depression, and alienation. Although the study participant experienced the death of his mother in his youth, the past unfortunate experiences became the driving force of his present life as he vowed not to live like his father.
Next, the meaning of the encounter with the Anti-abuse Police Officer is as follows.
First, in Dimensions, it was a series of moments when the father's constant drinking and behavior continued, but the research participant, who developed physically and emotionally, finally reported to the police. In Turning, it was an opportunity for the researcher to intervene in the life of the research participant in earnest. The research participant, who dropped out of school and continued to live a lethargic life, thought about what he wanted to do after meeting with the Anti-abuse Police Officer. In addition, he received support and support from social protection factors including Anti-abuse Police Officers. In Adaptation, meeting with an Anti-abuse Police Officer became an opportunity, and finally, I am living in the present dreaming of a funeral guide.
This study confirmed that despite children's exposure to risk factors such as lethargy, depression, and anxiety due to abuse, active intervention and continued interest in social protection factors, including Anti-abuse Police Officers, can lead to positive life changes.
Bold policy improvements are needed so that Anti-abuse Police Officer, a social protection factor, can work professionally and responsibly. Whenever a special incident occurs, long-term measures are needed by fully accepting the stories of child abusers or victims or by previous studies or field workers rather than short-term measures conscious of public opinion.
In this study, based on the experience of a researcher who is an incumbent police officer, I tried to follow the life trajectory of Kim Hee Mang, a person who experienced emotional abuse, physical abuse, and neglect of domestic violence in his childhood but is now living a sincere life. And I tried to explore what the encounter with the Anti-abuse Police Officer I met in the course of his life meant to him. By reading the meaning of change through the life history approach of Kim Hee Mang, a person who experienced abuse in childhood, and the encounter with the Anti-abuse Police Officer, the ultimate purpose of the study was to broaden his understanding of child abuse and lead interest and discussion on the Anti-abuse Police Officer system, which can act as a social protection factor at the same time.
