Abstract
Purpose To investigate the effects of burnout, subjective health status, and the work environment on the job performance of nurses who returned to work after being on parental leave. Methods The participants were 166 nurses who returned to work within one year after being on parental leave and responded to a structured self-report questionnaire conducted from August 5 to 31, 2023. The questionnaire incorporated the nurse job performance and work environment measurement tools in Ko et al. (2007; 2022), the burnout measurement tool in Yoon et al. (2020), and the subjective health status measurement tool in Shin et al. (2009). The collected data were analyzed by frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, t-test, analysis of variance, Scheffé test, Pearson’s correlation coefficient, and multiple regression using SPSS/WIN 27.0. Results 1. Job performance averaged 3.79±0.68, burnout averaged 3.10±0.82, and subjective health status averaged 3.16±0.92 points out of 5 points, while work environment averaged 2.94±0.58 points out of 4 points. 2. Among the participants’ general characteristics, work unit (F=3.995, p=.020), work shift schedule (t=3.465, p=.001) caused statistically significant differences in job performance. Among the characteristics related to parental leave, reason for returning to work (F=5.465, p=.001), rotation after reinstatement (t=2.539, p=.012) and main caregiver during work (F=3.581, p=.008) caused statistically significant differences in job performance. 3. Job performance had a strong negative correlation with burnout (r=-.599, p<.001) but a strong positive correlation with subjective health status (r=.617, p<.001) and work environment (r=.826, p<.001). 4. Multiple regression analysis revealed an explanatory power of 70.2%. Work environment (β=.721, p=.001) and burnout (β=-.183, p=.001) were factors affecting the job performance of nurses who returned to work after parental leave. Conclusion Job performance of nurses who returned to work after parental leave was influenced by work environment and burnout. To improve the performance of such nurses, a positive work environment and help relieve stress to reduce burnout should be provided. This will help shorten the readjustment period for nurses who return to work and enable them to continue their nursing careers. The results can be used as foundational data to develop strategies to improve the job performance of nurses who return to work after being on parental leave.
