Impact of Tourism on Economic Growth

Abstract

본 논문에서는 관광주도성장가설(TLGH)에 근거하여 관광이 르완다의 경제성장에 미치는 영향을 분석한다. 기존 연구에서는 관광과 경제성장 간의 관계에 대해 명확한 합의가 이루어지지 않았기 때문에, 본 연구는 르완다를 사례로 선정하였다. 특히, 분쟁 이후 국가 차원의 분석이 부족하다는 연구의 공백을 보완하고자 하였으며, 관광이 생계와 인프라 재건에 미치는 역할을 중점적으로 탐구하였다. 본 연구는 1990 년부터 2023 년까지의 연간 시계열 자료를 활용하였고, 단기 및 장기 효과 분석을 위해 자기회귀분포지연(ARDL) 모형을 적용하였다. 경제성장은 실질 GDP 로 측정하였으며, 관광활동과 환율 효과를 포착하기 위해 국제 관광객 수와 실질 환율을 주요 변수로 사용하였다. 또한 노동, 자본, 무역개방도를 통제변수로 포함하였다. 분석 결과, 단기적으로 무역개방도를 제외한 모든 변수(관광객 수, 노동, 자본, 실질 환율)는 실질 GDP 에 긍정적이고 통계적으로 유의미한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 장기적으로는 관광객 수, 노동, 자본, 실질 환율, 무역개방도 모두 실질 GDP 에 긍정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 분석되었다. 이러한 결과는 관광이 르완다의 경제성장, 특히 분쟁 이후 국가 재건 과정에서 중요한 역할을 하고 있음을 시사한다. 본 연구는 관광의 경제적 효과에 대한 국가별, 분쟁 이후 맥락에서의 실증적 근거를 제공하며, 관광산업의 지속적 성장과 정책적 지원의 필요성을 강조한다.|This thesis analyzes the impact of tourism on Rwanda’s economic growth based on the Tourism-Led Growth Hypothesis (TLGH). Since previous studies have not reached a clear consensus on the relationship between tourism and economic growth, this study selects Rwanda as a case study. In particular, it aims to fill the research gap regarding country-level analysis in post-conflict contexts, focusing on the role of tourism in rebuilding livelihoods and infrastructure. This study utilizes annual time-series data from 1990 to 2023 and applies the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) model to analyze both short- and long-term effects. Economic growth is measured by real GDP, while international tourist arrivals and the real exchange rate are used as key variables to capture tourism activity and currency effects. Labor, capital, and trade openness are included as control variables. The analysis finds that, in the short term, all variables except trade openness (tourist arrivals, labor, capital, real exchange rate) have a positive and statistically significant effect on real GDP. In the long term, tourist arrivals, labor, capital, real exchange rate, and trade openness all have a positive impact on real GDP. These results suggest that tourism plays an important role in Rwanda’s economic growth, especially in the process of post-conflict reconstruction. This study provides empirical evidence on the economic effects of tourism at the country level and in post- conflict contexts, emphasizing the need for continued growth and policy support for the tourism industry.
