Abstract
The burgeoning space industry demands innovative materials for robust radiation protection. This study presents a novel lightweight, flexible composite for comprehensive shielding against X-rays, protons, and secondary neutrons. Enhanced dispersion of pyridine-functionalized boron nitride nanosheets (Py-BNNs) within a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) matrix significantly improved radiation attenuation and thermal stability. Optimized with bismuth iodide (BiI3), the Py-BNN/PDMS/BiI3 composite exhibited superior linear (4.258 cm⁻¹) and mass attenuation (3.451 cm²/g) coefficients, with reduced half-value and tenth-value layers. Proton irradiation tests confirmed that the well-dispersed Py-BNNs effectively scattered proton beams, resulting in enhanced particle radiation shielding performance. This lightweight, flexible, and multi-radiation shielding composite offers a promising and sustainable solution for safeguarding human health and electronic systems in space.
