- Canonical correlation among symptom cluster and psychological-health behavior variables in non-muscle invasive bladder cancer male patients
- Abstract
- Purpose The purpose of this study is to identify symptom clusters in patients with non-muscle invasive bladder cancer and to figure out psychological-health behaviors variables (Uncertainty, Grit, Smoking, Physical activity, Diet, Alcohol consumption). Methods This study is a descriptive study. Data was collected in the form of questionnaires through face- to-face interviews with 100 patients from June to October 2024. Descriptive analysis, independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, Spearman’s rank correlation, exploratory factor analysis, and canonical correlation analysis were performed. Results The symptom clusters perceived by the patients with non-muscle invasive bladder cancer were five. The highest order of the five symptom clusters were sexual vitality dysfunction, anxiety, male sexual dysfunction, urinary disorder-discomfort, and abdominal distension. The canonical correlations among symptom clusters and psychological-health behaviors were 0.60, representing 36% overlapping variance for the first pair of canonical variates. The canonical variates indicated that lower anxiety (Rs=-.76), urinary disorder-discomfort (Rs=-.53), abdominal distension (Rs=-.43), and sexual vitality dysfunction (Rs=-.47) were associated with lower uncertainty (Rs=-.89), higher physical activity (Rs=.44), and lower alcohol consumption (Rs=-.44). Conclusion Male patients with non-muscle invasive bladder cancer have a particularly high psychological burden due to the high recurrence rate and frequent invasive surveillance systems. Actually, their Mental symptoms have a greater impact than physical symptoms. Therefore, psychological-educational interventions(PEI) to mediate uncertainty, customized exercise programs to promote physical activity, and health behavior improvement including alcohol management are necessary to alleviate their symptom clusters. Detailed impact analysis of additional health behavior factor is necessary, and the development of a multifaceted nursing intervention model is required to improve their quality of life.
