‘소방학교’ 평생학습체제 실현을 위한「학점은행제」 도입 방안 연구
- Alternative Title
- A Study on the Introduction of the Credit Bank System to Establish a Lifelong Learning Framework in Fire Academies
- Abstract
- In recently rapidly advancing intelligent information society—marked by technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), big data, autonomous vehicles, and robotics—continuous learning is essential for individuals to adapt to constant change. This wave of transformation is also affecting the firefighting sector. In response, the National Fire Service Academy of Korea has been actively restructuring its curriculum to systematically cultivate the core competencies of fire service personnel, enabling them to meet the challenges of the future. Despite receiving high-quality education through well-equipped facilities and dedicated instructors, firefighters often face limitations in participating in academic forums, symposiums, or publishing scholarly work, primarily due to the lack of formal academic degrees. While their field experience and practical knowledge are extensive, the absence of recognized credentials often hinders their participation in specialized discussions and academic recognition. One viable solution to this problem is the implementation of the Academic Credit Bank System (ACBS) within the National Fire Service Academy. The ACBS, based on the Act on the Recognition of Credits, allows individuals to earn academic degrees by accumulating credits from both formal and informal learning experiences. Given the Academy’s robust educational programs, experienced faculty, and infrastructure, it is well-positioned to serve as an accredited institution under the ACBS. This study aims to explore the feasibility of introducing the ACBS at the National Fire Service Academy by investigating the needs and perceptions of firefighters currently undergoing training. A survey was conducted targeting 271 firefighters working in Incheon metropolitan area from June 1 to June 9, 2024. The study focused on their intention to pursue degrees, their attitudes toward credit recognition for basic and advanced training, and the possibility of earning credits through firefighting-related certifications. The findings indicate that while initial interest in acquiring degrees among firefighters is moderate, their willingness increases significantly when credits are granted for existing training and certifications. The results also reveal a lack of awareness regarding alternative degree acquisition methods, highlighting the need for better information dissemination. Ultimately, this research supports the notion that the introduction of the ACBS can contribute meaningfully to fostering a lifelong learning system within the fire service and enhancing the academic and professional development of firefighters.
