The Relationship Between Mothers’ Perfectionism and Parenting Beliefs and the Social Competence of Intellectually Gifted Young Children
Abstract
This study aimed to explore the relationship between mothers’ perfectionism and parenting beliefs and the social competence of their intellectually gifted young children. and to analyze which maternal factors influence the development of social competence. Specifically, the study examined two dimensions of perfectionism—high personal standards and fear of mistakes or failure—and three subdomains of parenting beliefs: promoting problem-solving ability, promoting creativity, and promoting daily living skills. Children’s social competence was assessed in terms of initiative, cooperation, and sociability. The participants were 235 mothers of gifted children aged 3 to 5, enrolled in gifted education institutes located in Seoul, Sejong, Daejeon, and Busan. Data were collected through online surveys and analyzed using SPSS 29.0, including descriptive statistics, correlation analyses, and stepwise multiple regression analyses. The results indicated that maternal high personal standards were significantly and positively correlated with all parenting belief subdomains and with all aspects of children’s social competence. In contrast, fear of mistakes or failure showed significant negative correlations with initiative, sociability, and overall social competence, but was not significantly related to any parenting beliefs. All three parenting beliefs were positively correlated with each domain of children’s social competence. Regression analyses revealed that high personal standards positively influenced all subdomains of social competence, while fear of mistakes or failure negatively influenced some areas. Among parenting beliefs, promoting creativity and promoting daily living skills positively affected children’s overall social competence, while promoting problem-solving ability had a significant effect only on cooperation. These findings suggest that mothers’ perfectionism and parenting beliefs are closely related to the social development of gifted young children. In particular, perfectionism characterized by high standards and parenting beliefs that emphasize creativity and practical skills may play a supportive role in fostering children’s positive social competence. Keywords: gifted young children, maternal perfectionism, parenting beliefs, social competence.
