A Study onTopics in High School English Textbooks
Abstract
The purposes of this study are to examine the congruity between topics in high school English textbooks and topic selecting criteria that the 7th national curriculum provides and to examine the perceptions of teachers and students on the topic selecting criteria in terms of practicality and preferences. Previous studies on the topics in English textbooks showed that the topic selecting criteria were not thoroughly reflected when textbooks were designed and the topics in the textbooks were not well distributed. To provide teachers and students with textbooks which are congruent with curriculum and their needs, this study examines the congruity between topics and curriculum, and the congruity between teachers and curriculum, and the congruity between students and curriculum. Major findings can be summarized as follows:
(1) Topics presented in the 7th national curriculum were not well distributed in the High School English textbooks. The textbooks did not fully consider the students' developmental stages which are stated in the curriculum. Thus, specific standards need to be established.
(2) Regarding the perception of teachers on topic selecting criteria in terms of practicality and preferences, their perceptions were not sufficiently reflected in that criteria. As with students, textbooks are also for teachers. Therefore, teachers' need to be considered when the curriculum is developed.
(3) Students perceptions on the topic selecting criteria in terms of practicality and preferences were not well reflected either. Therefore, to meet their needs, interest and cognitive developmental stages, further study should be done by the curriculum developers and textbook designers.
The problems stated above are from the narrow scope of research. This suggests that more comprehensive studies need to be taken so that specific guidelines for topic presentation can be provided.
