- Abstract
- This study investigated the removal capacity of two wetland systems of Dae-pyung, Jil-nal wetlands for control of pollutants from non point sources. A pilot system was constructed to evaluate the high concentration pollutant removal efficiency of submerged hydrophytes of the Dae-pyung wetland. Pollutant removal efficiencies of the Dae-pyung wetland were 65.05% for TSS, 22.12% for COD, 83.43% for NO₃^(-)-N, 68.63% for DIN and 37.25% for DIP and those of the Jil-nal wetland were 99.39%, 72.30%, and 29.77% for NO₃^(-)-N, DIN and PO₄³^(-)-P, respectively. The pollutant removal efficiencies of the pilot system were 4.01% for TSS , 18.81% for VSS, 0.06% for COD, 88.32% for NH₄^(+)-N , -19.21% for NO₂^(-)-N , 3.51% for NO₃^(-)-, 3.91% for DIN and 6.86% for PO₄³^(-)-P. The pilot system showed lower removal efficiencies for all pollutant investigated than the natural wetlands because influent concentrations were very high and the time period for the experiment was not adequate for the normal growth of submerged hydrophytes. Pollutant removal rates of the Dae-pyung wetland were 1530.35kg/ha/day, 98.93kg/ha/day, 29.23kg/ha/day and 1.60kg/ha/day for SS, COD, TN and TP, respectively. This study showed high removal efficiency of wetlands for pollutants form non point sources and provided base data for future construction of pocket wetlands to control non point source pollution.
