A Survey of Students' and Teachers' Perceptions of English Speaking Classes in Middle School
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine students' and teachers' perceptions of English speaking class in middle school. The objective of an English speaking class in the 7th national curriculum is to improve students' communicative competence. Several studies have indicated that there was a mismatch between teachers' perception of the ideal way to approach an English speaking class, Communicative Language Teaching, and methods actually used in class.
To help English teachers, this study examines middle school students' perceptions of their English speaking class, what this class actually entails and what kinds of problems students and teachers encounter in this class. The study goes on to suggest the solutions to the problems and educational implications. To collect data, questionnaires were administered to 64 students and 20 teachers in middle schools.
Results showed that many students and teachers highly perceived the basic principles of communicative language teaching and thought that the objective of English speaking classes should be to improve students' communicative skills. However, teachers do not highly apply communicative methods to their teaching even though they know the concepts for them. Also, students thought that in their English speaking classes, the principles of communicative language teaching were not implemented well enough even though this was the objective of the class. To improve English speaking classes, teachers suggested that the number of students in a classroom should decrease and students suggested that there should be more native teachers in school.
To meet the needs of teachers and students, the government should support our educational system and professional training for English teachers much more. Above all, we need more field research and survey about students in order to achieve the goal of English education.
