- Abstract
- This study was undertaken to examine the bioaccumulation residues of butyltins(BTs) in marine organisms (fish, bivalves, cephalopods and crustaceans) from Korean coasts. BTs were found in fish (ND~75.50 ng/g wet wt), bivalves(ND~61.43 ng/g wet wt), cephalopods (ND~69.97 ng/g wet wt) and crustaceans(ND~53.61 ng/g wet wt). The bioaccumulation ratio between tributyltin (TBT) and primary products, dibutyltin (DBT) and monobutyltin (MBT), in the different species varied considerably: MBT was bioaccumulated in rank order bivalves>cephalopods>crustaceans>fish, DBT was bivalves>crustaceans>cephalopods>fish, and TBT wasbivalves>fish>cephalopods>crustaceans.
The rank order of bioaccumulation frequency of BTs was bivalves>fish>cephalopods>crustaceans.
There is no correlation between BTs and lipid content or living depth of marine organisms. Concentrations of BTs in this study were similar or slightly low compared to that in other countries(Taiwan, Denmark, Asia, Mexico, USA and Poland). Hazard quotients (HQs) of BTs were in the range of 0.00002~0.04055, suggesting that the levels of BTs found in marine organisms may not be likely to cause any deleterious effects during lifetime in human population.
This study shows that BTs are accumulated in marine organisms from Korean coasts and therefore, BTs levels in marine organisms should be monitored more regularly.
