고등학교 영어교과서에 나타난 지각동사 보충어 연구

- Abstract
- The purpose of this study is to examine the meaning differences between the complements of English perception verbs, [NP+bare infinitive] and [NP+-ing participle], and to find out how the complements of English perception verbs are presented in the Korea high school English textbooks in order to teach Korean students more effectively. English perception verbs, in this paper, indicate feel, hear, notice, see, watch, which can take either [NP + bare infinitive] or [NP + -ing participle] as a complement.
By analysing the textbooks, ninety-nine sentences which contain the complement, [NP + bare infinitive] or [NP + -ing participle] are collected. thirty-one of them take [NP + bare infinitive], and sixty-eight sentences of them take [NP + -ing participle] as a complement. These whole sentences can be categorized as follows suggested by Pizer(1994): boundedness in time and unboundedness in time.
[NP + bare infinitive] claims the event is bounded in time. In other words, it has to do with the beginning and ending of the event or action. However, [NP + -ing participle] has an opposite meaning of [NP + bare infinitive] and conveys progression, repetition, and unboundedness in time. It means it is focused on the middle of the perceived event or action for [NP + bare infinitive].
The results of this study let us know how the complements of English perception verbs are affected and restricted semantically by context. Generally, the complements, [NP + bare infinitive] and [NP + -ing participle] are grammatically proper in the sentence which adopt perception verb as a predicate, but actually the form of the complements is determined by the context and the situation.
