- Abstract
- It is true that the place of myth education is better than that of the 6th curriculum. The works of myth have increased only in a quantitative respect, however, studies of the education in symbols of myth hasn't done fully. For that reason, today, myth is thought to be absurd by most people. Because the birth myths of nation like a story of a man who was born in an egg, and a bear who becomes woman are not realistic.
But it is a wrong result from the misunderstanding of the myths. In short, myth is the symbolic literature. Understanding the symbol ,only then people can get the real meaning of the myth. Therefore, in this study, I'd like to suggest ways to understand symbols; the most important part of the understanding of myth.
In order to prepare the basis of this discussion, first, it is important to define the relationship between the myth and the symbol; this discussion is based on the Roland Gerard Barthes's theory. Second, three works of myth recorded on text books are analyzed.:〈King Dongmyeong Myth〉,〈Princess Bari〉, 〈Dan-gun Myth〉. It gives lots of help not only knowing a present status of myth education but also giving data of symbolic words. And finally ,this study explains about the works,〈Princess Bari〉, taught to students and propose the teaching-learning plan. The reason why choose this work: First, there is little chance to experience the shamanism myth in the text books. Second, it is an unusual work. Third, it is to remind students of filial piety. Finally, it has variety of Korean symbolic words.
It is impossible to understand the plot and to analyze symbol of 〈Princess Bari〉in a short time. So I make use of a Mind Map method here. A Mind Mapping is a effective method to find the proper symbolic meaning because it will be used to represent words, ideas, tasks or other items linked to symbolic words. It is very proper way to understand symbolic words in short class time. In this way , after comparing before and after of understanding symbolism, it should be presented. This shows how important the understanding of symbolism to the understanding of myth.
Myth has played much of a role to constitute identity and to take a pride. And besides, it is useful to understand other literary works. I hope that scholars of education realize the importance of understanding of symbolism in myth education and study various education methods.
