Abstract

The ultimate objective of this dissertation is to provide the management guidelines for preventing the occurrences of occupational diseases among seafarers. The status quo of occupational diseases and related factors affecting their occurrences are examined by conducting surveys and interviews for 2,019 seafarers. Research results are expected to lay the foundation for improving seafarers' working environment and health care system. First, a huge amount of data on various aspects of study subjects, such as embarkation types, working environments, and health related behaviors, has been collected. Then, their effects on personal disease experiences and subjective ratings of health condition have been analyzed using Chi-square tests and multi-stage multiple regression analysis. The foremost findings of this research are summarized as follows: 1) Factors affecting subjective ratings of personal health conditions : income level, position of organizational hierarchy, smoking, drinking, body mass index (BMI), fatigue, rest hours, job intensity, overtime, sleep hours, job satisfaction, working atmosphere, support measure, and the number of seafarers on board. 2) About 70% of survey participants (1,492 out of 2,019 study subjects) have reported a total of 4,282 cases of occupational diseases (on average, 3 cases per person). The frequency distribution by disease types is as follows : 47.8% for musculoskeletal disorder (MSD), 36.1% for oral diseases, 36% for digestion complaints, 30.7% for trauma, and 26.8% for respiratory troubles. 3) Based on the research results, suggested are several guidelines for occupational disease prevention, including development of fatigue measure and health care management system, improvement of governmental regulations, and establishment of maritime clinic center.
