양성평등 관점에 비추어본 고등학교 교과서의 성교육내용 분석

Abstract

본 연구는 양성평등 관점에서 고등학교 성교육 방향을 제안하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 제7차 교육과정의 고등학교 교과서 중 성교육 관련 교과로 인정한 기술가정, 과학, 체육, 사회, 도덕에서 다루는 성교육 관련 교육내용을 양성평등 관점에 비추어 분석하였다. 이를 위하여 미국 성교육 종합지침서(SIECUS)의 4수준과 6영역별 주제를 분석의 기본 틀로 사용하였다. ‘성교육 종합 지침서’는 성교육의 영역을 모두 6영역에서 36개 주제와 각 주제마다 발달수준에 적합한 4수준을 설정하여 성교육 내용을 제시하고 있다. 본 연구의 분석 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 고등학교 성교육 관련 교과는 인간발달, 인간관계 영역에 치우쳐져 있는 것으로 나타났다. ‘성교육 종합 지침서’에서 제시한 6영역 중에서 대인관계기술은 전혀 다루고 있지 않았고, 성행동, 성건강, 사회와 문화 영역은 소수이며 인간발달, 인간관계 영역에 치우쳐져 있다. 또한 각 영역별 주제 중에서 ‘가치관’, ‘의사결정’, ‘의사소통’, ‘자기주장’, ‘협상’, ‘도움구하기’, ‘성행동 공유’, ‘성의 절제’, ‘성기능부전’, ‘생식기건강’, ‘성과 사회’, ‘성과 법’, ‘성과 예술’과 관련된 내용은 전혀 다루고 있지 않다. 둘째, 분석한 교과들의 성교육 내용은 3수준이 많았다. 고등학교 성교육 관련 교과는 ‘성교육 종합 지침서’의 4수준의 내용을 다뤄야 하나 분석한 교과들은 대부분 3수준이었고, 2수준과 1수준도 많았으며, 4수준은 소수였다. 셋째, 임신, 피임, 성 폭력 등의 주제에서 양성불평등적인 요소가 발견되었다. 기술·가정, 과학 과목의 임신, 피임 관련 주제는 여성 편향적 요소가 많은 것으로 나타났고, 체육 과목의 성 폭력 주제는 남성 편향적 요소가 많았다. 기술·가정과 과학은 여성성향으로, 체육, 사회, 도덕은 남성성향으로 치우친 경향이 있다. 넷째, 수준에 따른 양성불평등 요소를 발견할 수 있었다. 양성불평등적인 요소는 인간발달과 사회문화 영역, 임신 주제, 제 3 수준에서 주로 발견되었다. 양성 불평등 내용은 총 41개 하위요소가 나타났다. 과목별로는 체육 17개, 과학 10개, 기술가정 7개, 사회 6개, 도덕 1개의 하위요소가 나타났다. 추후 연구에서는 양성평등 관점에서 고등학교 성교육 방향을 위해 대인관계기술영역주제 추가 방향에 대한 탐색 연구, 고등학교 수준에 맞는 성교육 내용 구성 방안 논의 등이 이뤄져야 할 것이다.

The purpose of this study is to suggest new guidelines for high school sex education content from a gender equality standpoint. It analyzes sex related content from the 7th curriculum, including subject areas such as Technical/Home Economics, Science, Physical Education, Social Studies and Moral Studies. To pursue this study, the paper titled "Comprehensive Guidelines for Sex Education", from the Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States (SIECUS)'s 4 levels and 6 categories, was used as a basic template. "Comprehensive Guidelines for Sex Education" presents appropriate sex education content with 4 levels on 36 themes from 6 different categories. The results of this study are as follows: First, high school sex-related textbooks are focused mainly on human development and human relations. Among the six categories that "Comprehensive Guidelines for Sex Education" addresses, interrelation, sexual behavior, sex health, social and cultural areas are rarely discussed, focusing instead on human development and human relations. Additionally, they do not contain any content for the categories of 'value systems', 'decision making', 'mutual communication', 'self-assertion', 'negotiation', 'asking for help', 'sexual behavior', 'sexual control', 'sexual imperfection', 'genital health', 'sex and society', 'sex and law', or 'sex and art' Secondly, there is a lot of level 3 sex education content within the analyzed texts. Based on "Comprehensive Guidelines for Sex Education", high school sex education texts are recommended to contain level 4 content. However, analyzed texts mostly contain level 3, with level 2, and level 1 content, with a distinct lack of any level 4 content. Third, there are gender inequality issues raised by the content of such topics as pregnancy, contraception and sexual violence. From a philosophical, psychological, and cultural point of view, Technical/Home Economics and Science content leaned towards a feminine outlook whilst Physical education, Social studies, and Moral studies leaned towards a more masculine approach . Fourth, there are also gender inequality problems caused by content level. Cases of gender inequality were found in the human development, socio-cultural, and pregnancy sections of level 3. There were a total of 41 cases of gender inequality in this content. There were 17 sub-cases for Physical Education, 10 sub-cases for Science, 7 sub-cases for Technical/Home Economics, 6 cases for Social Studies and 1 case for Moral studies content. This study recommends that gender inequality issues must be included in high school sex education guidelines in the future in order to provide improved and appropriate content for high school level sex education.
