- Abstract
- It has been known that dictation has been underrated and regarded as a passive and tedious practice in the English class. However, dictation, if properly varied, can be an effective learning method.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of different dictation types on vocabulary, grammar, and affect among elementary school students.
There are two hypotheses: First, the accuracy of vocabulary and grammar among elementary school students can be improved by using different dictation types.
Second, dictation can facilitate elementary school students' attitudes toward English studies.
85 children of the sixth grade at a local elementary school in Busan were chosen as subjects. They were divided into three groups; An experimental group A (27 students), an experimental group B (29 students), and a control group (29 students).
The experimental groups A and B did dictation 10 times, but the control group did not. The experimental group A did dictation through pair work, and the experimental group B did dictation through individual work.
To obtain the data for analyzing the effectiveness of dictation on vocabulary, grammar, and affect, the pre-test on vocabulary accuracy, grammar, and affective attitude and the post-test on vocabulary accuracy, grammar, and affective attitude were administered.
The results are as follows : First, the experimental groups A and B were improved in vocabulary accuracy. The experimental group's results showed considerable improvement, but there were no significant differences between the experimental groups A and B.
Second, we could also find the possibilities of improvement in grammar accuracy through dictation.
Third, the results showed that dictation can positively influence on the elementary school students' affective attitude.
These results make it possible to predict that if dictation were properly used, it will contribute to improving the accuracy of vocabulary and grammar, and affective attitude of elementary school students.
It is recommended that teachers in elementary school positively make use of dictation as an effective method for improving elementary school learners' vocabulary, grammar, and affective attitude.
