A Study on theTeaching of English Reading for the Middle School Students : With Special Focus on the Novel
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to explore the ways to help middle school students learn effective reading through literary texts.
Literary texts have been considered to be effectively in many ways. First, literary texts are valuable authentic materials which internalize the grammar and vocabulary in context. Second, literary texts are useful tools to learn about various cultures in that they show precious and real expressions about culture. Third, literary texts can easily motivate learners not only because it is interesting but also because it is related to the experience of students.
Among literary texts, novel is one of the most attractive materials to teach middle school students. Novel is easier to teach and learn than any other literary texts. And it is also easy to get. There are many advantages except these.
As an example of practical teaching, E. B. White's Charlotte's Web is selected for its familiar theme and authentic vocabulary for middle school students. Separating the steps of reading into pre-reading activities, while-reading activity and post-reading activities and plans for teaching are presented.
In conclusion, utilizing literary texts in middle school English classes can improve students' linguistic proficiency and provide many opportunities of various experience. Therefore, it is necessary for teachers to recognize the texts as a useful method.
