Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to compare the meaning of synonymous pairs of evaluative adjectives. The selected adjectives are good and nice which are basic and common words for studying English and are frequently used, especially in conversation. We provide the dictionary definitions of the adjectives and define the semantic differences between the two adjectives. We analyze the data on the sentences from the British National Corpus of the two adjectives’ modifying nouns. We also classify the classes of nouns which combine with the adjectives and use the class types of co-occurring nouns to find out the differences meaning in. We also discuss the cases where both an adjective and the corresponding synonymous adjective co-occur in a given sentence. The main findings of this study are as follows : (1) Both good and nice share similar meanings, but both adjectives have different meanings in modifying nouns. (2) Good has some senses which are summarized as desirable, objective and social. (3) Nice has some senses which can be defined as pleasant, subjective and individual.
