夏目漱石의『こころ』

Abstract

본고에서는 夏目漱石의 『こころ』를 라는 인물을 중심으로 분석하여 와 선생의 관계의 발전 양상을 파악하고, 선생이 자신의 과거를 유서로써 남기게 된 이유를 와의 관계를 중심으로 살펴보았다. 작품 속에서 는 語り手이기 때문에, 단순히 사건을 진술하는 역할 정도로 간과하여 파악하기 쉬우나, 선생과의 교제 속에서 마음의 교감이 작용하는 모습을 통해 또한 한 사람의 주인공이라는 것을 알 수 있었다. 늘 내면에 괴로움과 고독함을 품고 있던 선생은 와의 교제로 인해, K의 죽음 이후 처음으로 타인에게 마음을 열었고 죽기 전 단 한사람이라도 타인을 믿고 싶었던 바람을 이루게 된다. 는 선생이 잊고 있었던 예전의 자신의 모습을 떠올리게 하는 순수하고 진지한 모습을 지닌 인물이다. 선생은 를 만났기 때문에 죽기 전 마지막으로 한 사람이라도 믿을 수 있게 되었다고 한다. 이처럼 는 선생에게 일방적으로 사상적인 영향을 받기만 하는 인물이 아니라, 적극적으로 사건을 풀어나가는 능동적이고 주체적인 인물임을 알 수 있다. 이러한 의 역할은 선생이 자신의 과거를 고백하게 되는 한 가지 요인으로 작용한다. 선생은 인생 그 자체에서 살아있는 교훈을 얻고 싶다는 의「真面目」에 의해, 에게 자신의 과거를 유서로써 남기게 된 것이다. 는 선생이 자기 안의 괴로움으로부터 벗어나려고 하기 직전에 믿음을 부여하고, 선생의 과거로부터 인생의 교훈을 얻으려고 하는 진지한 인물이다. 또한, 선생이 자신의 과거를 유서로 남기고자 하는 마음을 가질 수 있도록 하였기 때문에 선생의 변화에 가장 큰 영향을 끼친 인물이라고 할 수 있을 것이다. 이어서「両親と私」에서는 시대상황과 함께「先生と私」에 이어 계속되는 선생과 의 관계를 살펴보고, 그로 인해 변화된 의 모습을 가족관계 속에서 살펴보았다. 선생을 만난 뒤 변화된 는 부모님의 행동이 촌스럽고 무지하게만 느껴지고, 자연스럽게 선생과 아버지를 비교하게 된다. 또, 병으로 위독한 아버지를 측은하게 느끼면서도 아버지를 볼 때마다 선생을 연상하며, 가족과 타인 사이에서 혼란스러워 하는 모습을 보인다. 그러나 아버지의 죽음의 순간에 알게 된 선생의 죽음은 를 東京로 떠나게 하고, 결국 혈연관계를 떨치고 정신적인 관계를 향하여 달려가는 의 모습을 발견할 수 있었다. 또한「両親と私」에서는 선생과 아버지의 죽음과 함께, 시대를 대표하는 인물들-明治天皇과 乃木大将-의 죽음 또한 나타난다. 이들의 죽음은 시대 상황을 바탕으로 하고 있기 때문에 각각의 죽음을 시대상황의 표출이라는 한 가지 의미로 뭉뚱그려 파악하기 쉽다. 그러나 선생과 아버지의 죽음을 明治時代의 종언의 의미로만 파악하는 것은 무리가 있다고 생각된다. 明治天皇과 乃木大将의 죽음은 선생이 자살하게 되는 계기이며, 내면의 괴로움으로부터 벗어날 때를 기다려 오던 선생에게 그 기회를 부여한 사건이다. 선생의 죽음은, K의 죽음 이후 세상 밖에서 살아가려 했던 선생도 결국 시대상황에 많은 영향을 받아왔다는 것을 의미한다. 또한, 이로 인해 선생은 죽기 전 약속하였듯이 에게 자신의 과거를 유서의 형태로 남기게 되었다. 한편 의 아버지의 병세는 天皇의 경과에 따라 악화되고, 아버지는 天皇의 병과 자신의 병을 동일시하고 있다. 이 부분은 작품 속에서 시대 상황을 가장 여실히 보여주는 장면이라고 생각된다. 선생에게 시대상황은 죽음의 계기가 되었지만 의 아버지에게 있어 시대 상황은 자신의 병세와 동일시되고 있다. 따라서 선생과 아버지의 죽음, 明治天皇과 乃木大将의 죽음은 모두 각각의 독립적인 의미를 가지면서, 동시에 시대 상황과 흐름이라는 공통점 또한 엿볼 수 있었다. 본고에서 가장 중점적으로 다루어 온 선생과 의 관계는「頭」와「胸」라는 대비로 설명이 가능하다. 는 선생을 만난 이후 선생의 지식과 사상에 영향을 받았기 때문에, 둘의 관계를 단순히「頭」로 맺어진 관계로 파악하기 쉬우나 와 선생이 서로 정신적인 관계를 맺을 수 있었던 것은「胸」, 즉 서로 마음을 주고받았기 때문에 가능했던 것이다. 단순한 語り手로 간주되기 쉬운 인물인 는 작품 속에서 선생과 유일하게 마음을 통할 수 있었던 상대였다. 따라서 작품명인『こころ』는 선생과 의 관계를 이어주는 마음을 나타내는 것이며 또한 서로가 변화될 수 있었던 가장 큰 원인이라고 할 수 있을 것이다. 이상과 같이 라는 인물은 작품 속에서 이야기의 전개와 서술을 담당할 뿐만 아니라 적극적으로 선생과의 만남을 이끌어 나가며 유일하게 선생의 마음을 변화시킨 주체적인 역할을 담당하고 있었던 것이다.

In this dissertation, development progress of the relationship between and Sensei is analyzed regarding to Natsume Souseki’s 『Kokoro』for . It is easily considered as as a character who’s simply describing the happenings, However, it is quite recognizable after seeing the relationship between Sensei and , that is also an main character. Sensei, who had always had loneliness and roughness in his mind, become to open his heart for the first time, thanks to relationship with , after K’s death, Succeeded to make his dream “believing in others, at least one”, come true. is a innocent and sincere character, which reminds Sensei of himself, Sensei become to believe one person because he met . Thus, works not only as effected by Sensei, but also as an active character who’s solving the main problems. And this type of ’s character contributes to one of the reasons which makes Sensei to confess about his past. The sincerity of ’s will to learn from Sensei’s own life, makes Sensei to give his past as testament to . is a serious character who’s given a faith right before Sensei tried to abandon his mind’s roughness, and wants to learn a lesson from his. Also he can be said that has most powerful impact on Sensei’s change by making Sensei to give story about his past. Next, in「Parents and I」, relation between Sensei and , and that of and his family is described. After knowing Sensei, thinks his parents illiterate and silly , and compares Sensei and his father. On one hand he feels sorry for his father being sick, on the other hand he feels confused between the two, his family and the others. However the death of Sensei , which occurred at the same time with his father’s death, makes to leave for Tokyo, and persue mental relations. And the deaths of iconic features of that time-the emperor and the general-are described as well. Their death can be considered as a sign of an era. But it is quite irrational to think it only as a sign of the Meiji’s End. The death of the emperor and the Nogi general, is the opportunity to Sensei’s suicide which gives Sensei who’s been longing to abandon his sufferings. Sensei’s death means that Sensei has been effected from contemporary circumstances, even though he had tried to neglect it after K’s death. Moreover, because of this, as he promised before this death, he gave his past story as a testament to . In the mean time, father’s condition gets worse as the emperor’s, so father considers his condition same as The emperor’s. Most of the part features vividly of the era. The circumstances of era becomes a motive of Sensei’s death, but for ’s father, it means his own condition. Accordingly, the death of Sensei’s, father’s, The emperor’s and the general’s can have each individual meaning and at the same time, they blend with the social circumstances of the time. The relation between Sensei and , can be explained as the contradiction of the brain and the heart, which has been described most importantly through out this dissertation. has effected by Sensei's knowledge and ideology after meeting Sensei, it can be understood that the relation is made by brain, yet it is better to analyze theirs relation as a mental thing, because they communicate by their heart. is considered as a simple narrator but the only character who Sensei can open his mind. Hence the title『Kokoro』is the signage of the heart between Sensei and , and also it's the biggest reason to the changes of the both. Like this, leads the story by unfolding and narrating it, and also actively leads meetings with Sensei, finally and solely, achieves to change Sensei's mind.
