Abstract
High school students’ perceptions of the causes of school This study researches the conditions that bring about in-school violence, some of the typical causes of this violence, as well as student's beliefs about coping with cases of in-school violence. This aim of this study is to help students face the problem of violence by making them aware of the data in this survey, as well as preparing some basic materials for the purpose of educating our students on the prevention of violence in schools.
The research questions of this study are as follows:
First, what are the conditions for violence in our schools, with reference to the type of gender at each school?
Secondly, what are student's beliefs about the typical causes of violence?
Thirdly, what are student's beliefs about the best way to deal with typical occurrences of violence?
The students involved with this study were chosen from 4 academic co-ed high schools and also from 4 vocational co-ed high schools in the city of Busan, South Korea.
The results of this study in brief are as follows:
Schools must implement a prevention education program with regards to in- school violence, as well as more strictly apply their existing regulations on violence in school, focusing on boosting the powers of the disciplinary committee.
At the same time, schools must meet the problem of in-school violence head-on, and do their best to stamp out the causes of violence before they start. Schools should also prepare a protection system for the safety of those people who wish to report occurrences of in-school violence, lessening the risk of revenge attacks by the bullies involved.
Next, schools need to help students to face the problems of in-school violence by highlighting the importance of preventative measures such as self-defense or the benefits of expressing negative opinions more positively.
Finally, the school must set up a student violence council to combat occurrences of in-school violence, offering a place where students can go to receive counsel easily, and where schools can see the results of their efforts through offering deep and meaningful counsel to their students.
