An Evaluation Study of Soild Sediments in Sewer Systems Using SWMM 4
Abstract
The deposition of solids in the existing sewer systems has caused the frequent flooding in the urban area during the rainy season and local heavy rain due to the reduction of conveyance in the conduit. To solve this problem and to maintain the existing sewer systems appropriately, it is necessary to evaluate the solid sediments in the sewer systems during or after the heavy rain, but it requires a lot of efforts and expense in reality. Therefore, in this study I simulated the solid sediments in the sewer systems for a tributary of Bujeoncheon through the TRANSPORT block of SWMM model developed by cooperative research of Metcalf & Eddy Co. & Florida University under the sponsorship of American Environmental Protection Agency(EPA) in 1971(Huber and Dickinson, 1988). As a result of simulation, the total soil loss and sediment yield in the area during the heavy rain period was evaluated as about 172.4 × 10^(3) kg
. Most of the soil loss and sediment yield were simulated to flow down to the main stream or the downstream through the sewer systems during the rainy days, but the solid sediments of about 23.0 × 10^(3) kg are deposited in the sewer systems after the heavy rain. When changed into the deposition depth in consideration of moist unit weight of solids and the volume of sewer systems, the solids are deposited by 31.9 cm in the sewer systems. As a research result of the field where the sedimentation happened by about 25 cm, the simulated result was fairly coincided.
Through the above result, it seems to be a good tool to get the basic data for the dredging of solid sediments in the existing sewer systems that have been installed recklessly. Moreover, it seems to contribute to the reduction of life or property damages due to the internal flooding in urban area by securing the conveyance of existing sewer systems through the dredging of solid sediments.
