귀면문 전통문양의 디자인 활용방안에 관한 연구

Abstract

전통문양은 한 민족의 역사와 문화를 반영하는 가장 비주얼한 기록이라 할 수 있다. 오늘날 모든 예술의 가치는 표현형식에 있어서 감각을 통한 지적, 또는 상상적 창조활동에 의하여 나타나는데 우리의 전통문양은 이를 뒷받침 할 수 있는 자산이라 할 수 있으므로 현대적 감각을 살려 디자인에 전통의 색을 잇는 것이 일종의 경쟁력이라 생각한다. 본 논문의 연구목적은 전통문양 중 한국과 중국에서 공동으로 사용되었던 귀면문을 주제로 정하고 그 기원과 의미를 이해하고 전통과 현대의 감각이 조화된 것으로 그 정체성을 살려 현ㄷ적인 변용을 통해 새롭게 해석해보고자 한 것이다. 우선 귀면문의 이론적 고찰을 통해 귀면문의 한국과 중국의 다양한 용어를 동일한 귀면문으로 정하고, 그 응용사례를 알아봄으로써 한국과 중국에서 공동으로 사용된 부분이 건축자재로서의 수막새에 있으므로 두 나라의 귀면문수막새의 문양비교를 통해 문양특징을 살펴보았다. 그 결과 한국의 귀면문은 오랜 세월동안 큰 변화를 가져오지는 못했지만 귀면문이 정형화되고 일정한 틀이 정해졌고, 중국은 56개 민족으로 구성된 나라로서 시대마다 다양한 문양변화를 보이며 각 민족의 성향에 따라 문양도 변화되어 왔으며 이로 인해 한국에 비해 귀면문이 다양함을 알 수 있게 되었다. 또 현대디자인에 활용된 사례를 조사한 결과 문양이 응용이 잘 되지 않고 있는 실정이므로 본 논문에서 앞으로 디자인에서의 활용방안을 제안해보았다.

Traditional patterns are one of the most visual records that reflect a nation’s history and culture. Today, as the value of arts is expressed through intellectual or imaginative creation, and Korea’s traditional patterns are recognized as valuable assets which can support the creative activity, maintaining but modernizing the traditional design could be competitive. Among the traditional patterns, this study targets monster-mask design which has been used both in Korea and China. This thesis is to understand origin and meaning of the design, give it a new identity of harmonization of traditional and modern senses, and analyze it through modern modification. First, the theoretical contemplation of monster-mask design gathered various terminologies of monster-mask design in Korea and China, unified the terminologies, and searched the applications. As the design has been used in roof-end tiles as building materials both in the two countries, this study compared the two monster-mask design roof-end tiles of each nation and looked into the characteristics. As a result, it has been revealed that though the Korean design has not been dramatically changed, it has been standardized and settled for a long time. On the other hand, the design of China, which has 56 nationalities, has shown various changes in patterns according to the times and nationality, making the design more diverse than that of Korea. In addition, the study searched the applications in modern design and found that the traditional patterns are only limitedly utilized. Therefore, this thesis suggested possible application measures in design.
