A Comparative Study on the Modernity between Kim Chunsoo's and Kim Suyoung's Poems
Abstract
This study aims at studying comparatively on the modernity between Kim Chunsoo's and Kim Suyoung's poems. As a modern subject with reason and rationality these two poets show their own modernity respectively through researching and experimenting endlessly for real liberty and creativity.
The exact division between 'modernity' and 'modernism' is full of an important suggestions in looking into the modernity of Kim Chunsoo and Kim Suyoung. The practical will of these two poets becomes a starting point for modernity as its central axis, and turns up as three aspects of showing the concrete process of modernity through the aspect of the subjects, the attitude of the world recognitions and the principle of the poetic structures.
First, in a view of the aspect of the subjects, the poems of Kim Chunsoo take their positions with an absolute purity in which any instrumental roles can not be tolerated as a space different from everyday life or reality. It results from a paranoiac purity of an esthetic subject named Kim Chunsoo. On the other hand, Kim Suyoung tries to implement a poetic liberty through his physical property which he realizes with his 'body'. So it appears a figure of an active subject which rejects a generally accepted idea, bringing out a schizothymia resistance, what is called 'salivating actions' about the existing values of the poems.
Second, in a view of the world recognitions, Kim Chunsoo's tragic recognition begins at the consciousness of parting caused by the extinction and the absence of beings. Under this recognition he comes to long for the eternity of beings and tries to find out the absolute values through the recognition and the insight of the world from 'a world in a parathesis' far away from the reality. On the other hand, Kim Suyoung comes to gain the tragic recognition, seeing deeply into the fatalism of beings which have to move endlessly from the backward reality. At last Kim Suyoung regards the world around himself as an enemy, and comes to face up to the unreasonable reality.
Third, in a view of the principle of the poetic structures, the poems of Kim Chunsoo put the heart of his poems on the forms of their linguistic expressions. So the structure of his poems is largely based on the principle governed by their forms rather than their contents. On the other hand, in case of Kim Suyoung, the form of poems does not exist uniformly, but is made up with all his body living his own life fiercely. So the structure of his poems is largely based on the principle in which their contents draw up their forms.
In conclusion, the poems of Kim Chunsoo try to get the liberation and the freedom from the responsibilities and the maxims at some distance from the reality. This freedom of Kim Chunsoo shows the central principle of 'modernism' esthetics. On the other hand, the poems of Kim Suyoung turn up as an aspect of chaos which can not be established as the resistance against an existing dominant recognition. This freedom of Kim Suyoung shows the central principle of 'modernity', bringing out the pluralistic recognition of denying the absoluteness and the exclusiveness.
