Biology of Bat Star Asterina pectinifera
Abstract
The Bat Star Asterina pectinifera Muller et Troschel were studied in Jaran Bay, Gosung, Gyeongnam. Monthly samples were taken form July 2003 to February 2005. Larval development, growth, reproduction, population study and regeneration were investigated.
Larval development of A. pectinifera were characterized by body morphology. Larval developmental stages were bipinnaria, brachiolaria and juvenile stage. Larvae became bipinnaria within 3.2 days after hatching, and brachiolaria within 16-18 days under 20±1℃ condition.
Growth of A. pectinifera were studied in the laboratory under the controlled condition, and growth were measured separately under high, low food supply and starvation. In 30 ㎜, 50 ㎜L and 70 ㎜ size classes growth rates were highest in the animals reared with high food supply. In 30 ㎜, 50 ㎜ and 70 ㎜ size classes increment were affected more than in small size class.
A. pectinifera spawned once a year in June-August. Gonardsomatic index (GSI) of female and male peaked in July. Annual reproductive cycle can be divided in to 5 successive stages. Ripe stage of ovary and testis were from March to July. Radius length at 50% maturity was 40 ㎜ in both female and male.
A. pectinifera grew allometrically. Three years classes were consistently present in A. pectinifera. This species produced a single cohort per year.
Regeneration of A. pectinifera were studied in the laboratory conditions. Regeneration of arms of 50 ㎜ size class were measured under high and low food supply. Monthly regeneration rate was high in the amputated individuals reared with high food supply. Regeneration rates were high in the animals with less arms amputated.
