- Abstract
- Protective coatings are unique specialty products which represent the most widely used method of corrosion control. The function of a protective coating is to separate two reactive material; substrate of structure, corrosive industrial fumes, liquids, solids, or gases and so on. Organic coatings act as a barrier to prevent either chemical compounds or corrosion current from contacting the substrate. This barrier property decreases because blisters occur by contraction and expansion of resin with effect of the UV, rain, temperature. In this study, when protective coatings were exposed in corrosive condition, the correlation among the results of EIS and optical properties such as gloss and color difference were examined by decreasing barrier property.
Three different coating systems were used as specimens. First coating system was composed of inorganic zinc permanent primer, epoxy coating of BPA-type and polyurethane. Second coating system except inorganic zinc primer. the last, fluoroplastic was used instead of polyurethane to examine about influence of top layer.
These coated metal samples were investigated through acceleration test (NORSOK M 501 cyclic test, QUV test and outdoor weathering test) by using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS), gloss and color difference.
Atomic force microscope(AFM) and scanning electron microscope(SEM) were used to back up correlationships of optical property and EIS.
