- Animacy Scale and the Choice of Referential Expressions in English and Korean
- Abstract
- This study discusses how referential expressions is differently coded in English and Korean in terms of animacy scale. In this paper, referential expressions mean pronouns, names, common nouns and zero anaphora. For this purpose, The English and Korean parallel corpuses have been analysed on the basis of individuation scale and hierarchy of persons. First, in matter of individuation scale the frequency of pronouns, names, common nouns, ellipses used is investigated in two languages. Second, in light of hierarchy of persons the prevalence of first person, second person and third person is explored in them.
The result of the thesis revealed significant contrasts between English and Korean. First, English uses pronouns predominantly whereas ellipses with low level of animacy is used in Korean. Second, English is observed more frequent use of first and second pronoun than Korean by replacing another pronoun with low level. In conclusion, English tends to encode animacy strongly but Korean tends to suppress animacy.
