- A Study on Revitalizing the school councils of Academic High Schools
- Abstract
- The goal of this study is to determine methods to activate the school councils of high schools. To complete this a survey was conducted to evaluate teachers' perceptions concerning the organization, operation, and accomplishments of the council.
Coinciding with the objective, research further analyzed three specific study problems. First, what are teachers’ perceptions of the authenticity, expertise, and election process of the council members? Second, what are the opinions concerning the function and authority of the council? Third, what are suggestions to further reactivate the council?
To identify solutions to these problems, a survey consisting of 24 questions was designed by the researcher with the assistance of an advisor. 400 surveys were distributed to 20 academic high schools in Busan, of which 360 were returned.
To revitalize the school councils, survey results suggested the following:
(1) Members of the council who are teachers need to be more specialized for their job and council participation should be regarded as workload; therefore a reduction of overall workload is required.
(2) Council members who are teachers should assume more leadership roles in the running of the council.
(3) Council members who are parents and community leaders need to receive financial incentives, which would assist and motivate greater involvement.
Although this study is restricted to specific academic high schools in Busan, the suggestions generated can be applied to all high schools. Further suggestions demonstrate results are applicable to all levels of elementary, middle, and high schools and identify effective solutions to activate all school management councils.
