- Abstract
- Recently, there has been active research into the Gaya(加耶) history of Korean ancient history. Based on those academic research results, museums have begun to be established in the old Gaya region, beginning in the latter 1990s. This study named those museums as ‘Gaya cultural museums’. The features of Gaya cultural museums hold two aspects in common. First, their central theme is Gaya history, and second, they also deal with the history of the regions where they are located.
Furthermore, research performances into Gaya history have affected the social curriculum for elementary and secondary schools. However, Gaya history was only briefly mentioned in the curriculum for elementary school, and the curriculum did not show the current research performances properly.
Therefore, this study aims to look at current Gaya history education evident in the social curriculum for elementary school, first. At the same time, the study reviews the current situation of Gaya cultural museums as well as current operation, contents, and problems of their current educational programs aimed at elementary school students. These procedures may be directed to reinforce the educational role of each museum and further enhance historic awareness by elementary school students, related to Gaya history in desirable connection between the social curriculum for elementary school and the educational programs of museums.
Lastly, the study is to propose several education programs that elementary school students can easily approach in easy and fun ways by utilizing educational programs currently offered by each museum based on Gaya historic contents shown in the current social textbook and social inquisitive materials for elementary school.
In addition, this study may be meaningful in delivering balanced history education by promoting Gaya history education while enhancing the pride of elementary school students of local history for the region that shares Gaya history.
