Abstract
Ce3+-doped Ca3Gd2(BO3)4 phosphors were synthesized by solid state reaction. The phase purity of the prepared phosphors was confirmed by X-ray power diffraction analysis. The excitation spectra of Ca3Gd2(BO3)4:Ce3+ phosphors exhibit the lines emission at 255, 277 and 315 nm due to the 8S7/2 ∪ 6DJ, 8S7/2 ∪ 6IJ and 8S7/2 ∪ 6PJ transitions of Gd3+ together with broad Ce3+ 4f65d band, respectively,. The band with a maximum at 360 nm is attributed to the f?Cd transition of Ce3+ in the Ca3Gd2(BO3)4 lattice. The excitation spectrum seems to consist of five bands by crystal-field splittings of the 5d state of Ce3+ with low site symmetry. The emission spectra of Ca3Gd2(BO3)4:Ce3+ show that the bands at 380 and 410 nm corresponding to the 2F5/2 and 2F5/2 states of 4f1 configuration of Ce3+. The red shift of Ce3+-emission was found as the Ce3+-concentration increases, which could be explained by the change in crystal-field symmetry and strength with increasing Ce3+-concentration. The energy transfer mechanism of Gd3+ and Ce3+ ions is discussed in different concentration Ca3Gd2(BO3)4 phosphors.
