A study of teaching method of English using movie Rapunzel
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to suggest a lesson plan for the teaching of English to 3rd grade students of middle school in order to develop their communicative competence using English-language movies. It is designed to introduce feature movie videos as valuable materials for improving the four language skills - listening, speaking, reading, and writing - and to increase learners' motivation.
For effective teaching of English using feature films, Tangled was selected, and a lesson plan was designed for middle school students. Over the course of seven periods, integrated teaching methods were implemented as follows: listening practice through selected scenes, reading practice with a printed script of the movie, speaking practice which included pair role play and group discussions, and writing practice requiring the students to write about one specific topic related to the day's lesson.
To achieve the goal of this study and to examine the usefulness of movies as teaching materials, the lessons were divided into the three parts: pre-viewing, viewing, and post-viewing. Pre-viewing ― presenting topics and important expressions ― is the stage in which the students prepare for the viewing of the movie.
Using this teaching method, learners are given the opportunity to improve their English communicative competence, and the teaching materials and lesson plans suggested in this study may help teachers to design more effective methods for using feature films.
