- Abstract
- The purpose of this study is to examine linguistic differences between British and American English and also investigate the awareness of Korean university students about the two varieties of English.
To begin with, one general characteristic of American English is a high degree of uniformity. It is quite homogeneous in spite of the huge size of the land as compared with the regional varieties of British English in dialectal differences. Another specific feature of American English is archaism, the preservation of old feature of the language which have gone out of use in the standard speech of English.
Ever since Captain John Smith landed at Jamestown, Virginia in 1607, English of the United States has become different from that of England.
In vocabulary, Americans have used new compounds of English words and adapted English words to new uses and foreign elements. American spelling often differs in small ways from that customary in England. The pronunciation of American English, as compared with that of London, is somewhat old-fashioned. Finally, the last difference is, in small ways, of grammar.
As the United States plays a more important role in the academic world, and in world affairs. Thus, American English has become the most important international language.
At the present time and situation, this study will be helpful for English learners to better educate and understand American English as compared with British English.
