Abstract

Abstract The purpose of this study is to investigate the Korean translations of English coordinate conjunction ‘and’. The analysis of our Korean-English parallel corpus shows that ‘and’ constructions are translated into three different types of Korean constructions: conjunction, translation shift, relativizer. According to Quirk et al.(1990)'s definition, the English coordinate conjunction ‘and’ constructions have eight different meanings: sequent, consequence or result, contrast, concessive, condition, similar, addition, comment. There are also many kinds of the meanings of Korean conjunctions. The meanings of some Korean conjunctions are related with ‘and’: sequent, addition, consequence or result, condition, contrast, comment. The findings of this study indicate that the meanings of English coordinate conjunction ‘and’ and some Korean conjunctions are strongly related with each other.
