Abstract

This study aims to investigate how much percent of English vocabularies selected by Korea's Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, are reflected in the basic English vocabulary certification system, which has a goal of improving vocabulary skills for students' smooth communication ability, and also, aims to examine how much percent of elementary English textbook vocabularies appear in the essential English vocabulary certification exam sponsored by the Busan Metropolitan Office of Education. In addition, this study investigates if vocabularies reflected in the certification system are appropriate or not, by comparing textbook vocabularies with certification exam vocabularies. The comparative analysis of vocabularies appearing in English textbooks with those appearing in the essential English vocabulary certification system is conducted according to the procedures below. First, the analysis compares vocabularies in the certification exams of Class 8, 9, 10, 11 with basic vocabulary lists presented in the curriculum so as to examine how much percent of vocabularies are reflected. Second, the analysis examines if vocabularies were selected appropriately for the sake of students' study, by comparing vocabularies in the certification system with those newly appearing in English textbooks for 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th graders. Third, the analysis examines if consideration was fully made for elementary students' vocabulary learning by researching some vocabularies in the certification system which are not overlapped with vocabularies in the textbooks. Results from the analytical process above are as follows. First, the certification system of class 8, 9, 10, 11 fully introduced the vocabulary learning level recommended by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology. The number of vocabularies in the certification system was a total of 499, an average of 86.1% in terms of vocabulary introduction rate. This percentage is higher than 80%, recommended by the Ministry, which implies that the certification system consists of carefully selected vocabularies from the basic vocabulary lists. Second, when the number of vocabularies in the certification system by class is compared with the number of those recommended by the ministry, this study finds that class 11 for 3rd graders and class 9 for 5th graders are appropriate, class 10 for 4th graders is a little less than the recommended number of vocabularies, and however, class 8 for 6th graders presents too much number of vocabularies compared to the number of recommendation. Third, in a comparison of vocabularies in the certification system with newly appearing vocabularies by school grade, it was found that common vocabularies between them were 130 or 23.0% of a total of 566 vocabularies in the certification system. Vocabularies are very significant as they are most basic learning material in English education, and in particular, for beginner English learners. Therefore, more careful consideration is required so that an appropriate number of new vocabularies are presented in the process of vocabulary selection for textbooks and the certification system, and thus, more efficient vocabulary learning is available.
